Jan Stel (Purmerend) and Arjan Jansen (Hoorn) are two entrepreneurs and together they form the "Wall Starz" team. Two artists who have earned their stripes in the Dutch graffiti scene. Together they have taken on the task of lifting graffiti and street art out of obscurity. "It's the time for it.""
Street art, and especially graffiti, have a bad reputation with many people. "These are terms that are mainly associated with fast scribbling in dark tunnels". But a number of artists, who may have started out that way, have evolved and are now creating full-fledged, original, high-quality art.
The two often work with a positive theme, with Jan's depictions of superfine realism blending perfectly with Arjan's abstract-typographic lettering style. Jan and Arjan want to show their art to a wider audience. "The great thing about street art is that it's in a public space. It's not locked up in a museum or a private collection, but it's there for everyone."
Because they invest in the costs themselves, the municipality of Purmerend has given them permission to paint the outer wall of the Spurd sports hall at Zuivelpad number 1. They hope that municipalities, housing cooperatives, but also companies will be inspired and will also dare to take the step to include more art in public space. "Several municipalities in the Netherlands have already figured it out: people are happy with art". Art brightens up the city, connects people and gives a sense of security. And by creating art routes, for example, it can also work well for the middle class financially.
